Hi, I’m Aoife.
I am a doctor and women’s health advocate. I work with women who are in, or near, the menopausal transition and want to be well-informed about what’s going on in their bodies and lives, as well as what they can do about it.
I am a translator - between health information and you, and between you and your health professionals. I center your experience and life, not fixated on simply solving problems.
Why this work
There is a lot we know about what can help women thrive in midlife but the information is often either under- or over-simplified, attached with “you must!” statements, and misused to sell products that may help, or not (or worse). I’m here to get you past all of that.
I’ve seen a huge gap globally in a lack of support for women to make great decisions leading up to and through menopause. Health systems and professionals are doing what they can, but it’s not enough and women are left with the burden of educating and advocating for themselves. Again.
I have been researching and learning everything I can, using it myself and sharing with my friends. It’s time now to share it more widely.
WHY ME
I’m a medical doctor and public health expert. I’ve worked in women’s health in clinical, humanitarian, and policy settings around the world.
I went to medical school in New Zealand and worked clinically there - with the majority of my hospital experience in obstetrics and gynecology. I’ve also trained in tropical medicine and public health through LSHTM/University of London, which instilled a rigorous approach to research and evidence, but not just for the lucky few: for less-resourced people and settings especially.
I started living a globally-mobile life in my 20s. Since then I have been based in Rwanda, Lebanon, Kosovo, Myanmar, Austria, Indonesia, USA, and now Bhutan. I have worked with communities and international organizations, and mainly in the aid and development sector. I’ve had my babies far from family and the familiar - while working, studying, and grappling with the new identity of “mother”.
I’m also a woman in midlife and I’m living this as well. I have been outraged at how little we were taught in medical school, then saddened at the state of healthcare options especially in less-resourced settings, and finally resolute in my aim to be the support I wish I’d had.
What I do
I have four services available:
A totally free newsletter - The Menopause Brief - where I give you the answer to an important question about menopause. These are questions I have asked myself and have heard from friends and clients. It’s short and sharp - ‘brief’ indeed - and you will feel wiser in a few seconds. Sign up for the newsletter here.
A membership space where these topics (and more) are expanded upon. We look at why it’s happening, where science is sure and where it’s not, common pitfalls or frustrations, how to talk to your health professional about, and what you can start to do now. I will also answer your questions (anonymized) during a monthly webinar, because you are not alone and nothing is ‘too much’. The answers will be written up as well, for you and future community members. Learn more and join us here.
Online individual advisory sessions for those who really want that one-on-one advice. It’s a 60 minute session that I prepare for ahead of time with the information you give me. You will come out with clarity and a plan made for the realities of your life. Follow up is optional. This is ideal if you really need a shot of direction and support. Book a discovery call with me to find out more, or contact me here.
I work with groups to help spread the facts of menopause, as well as tailor solutions to particular contexts. Whether you are in a country with very few healthcare services, or in a financial situation where they are out of reach, we can find solutions together. Contact me to work with your group, and find out more here.
If there is something you are looking for or don’t know what you need, contact me and I’ll see how I can help.
An important note: I am a doctor, but these services are not medical care nor do they replace care from your doctor or healthcare professional. The information provided is for educational purposes. And, please, never share your confidential medical information via the contact or booking pages.
